It Is God’s Money

The ‘offering’ that God requires of us is literally our whole lives (Romans 12:1).

God’s desire for us is a reasonable and joyful response to the gospel. The Bible says that Christians are no longer their own, for they have been bought with a price, and they are called to glorify God in their body (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). God is the Creator and Giver of all, and in his goodness, he has given us the responsibility and privilege of stewardship inclusive of finances. We have the extraordinary privilege to be the managers of the assets God has entrusted – not given to us.

It Is Mission

The financial support of ‘mission’ is a clear New Testament principle.

The apostle John calls the partners of missional activity ‘fellow workers’ (3 John 5-8).

Giving is nothing less than mission. It is partnering in what God is doing. Our culture can make little sense of generous and joyful Christian giving. Such sacrificial and joyful giving can even provide for a gospel opportunity to share the reason for the hope we have in Christ (1 Peter 3:15). Jesus exhorts us to find greater pleasure in giving than receiving, and therefore commands us to reorient our lives around the gospel (Acts 20:35; 1 Corinthians 10:31; Ephesians 4:28).

You Are Free

Christians are free from the bondage of finding an identity and value in materialism.

Repentance from sin and faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ frees us from all bondage. Sin, Satan, self, materialism, and money is no longer our king–Jesus is. He who was the richest became poor for us (2 Corinthians 8:9). Jesus is concerned about our hearts and not our money. The Bible speaks about money because our bank account reveals the condition of our hearts (Matthew 6:21). Christians are free in Christ. We are free to be generous because our life does not consist in the abundance of our possessions (Luke 12:15).

At Redemption Church, we do not believe that the New Testament commands a 10% tithing. For some, 10% may not be possible, while for others, it may mean more!

The point is this:

Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:6-7
