The ‘offering’ that God requires of us is literally our whole lives (Romans 12:1). This is our reasonable and joyful response to the gospel. The Bible says that as Christians we are no longer our own but we have been bought with a price (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Recognizing this, and that God is the creator and giver of all we have, we are merely stewards of what he has given us. This includes our money. It is God’s money.
Financially supporting the mission of God is a New Testament pattern. The apostle John calls his financial partners “fellow workers” (3 John 1:5-8). Giving is nothing less than mission. It is partnering in what God is doing. Our culture can make little sense of generous and joyful Christian giving. It causes us to be asked to give a reason for the hope that we have (1 Peter 3:15). Jesus demands us to reorient our lives around the mission of God, which includes the reorienting of our finances around the mission of God (1 Corinthians 10:31).
Having become children of God through the gospel we have been freed from finding our identity and value in materialistic things. Money is no longer our king – Jesus is. He who was the most rich became the most poor for us (2 Corinthians 8:9). Jesus wants hearts more than money but he speaks about money so much because where we spend money quickly reveals our heart (Matthew 6:21). So we are free! Free to be generous. 10% is nowhere demanded in the New Testament but could be a pretty good guide. For some that may not be possible and for others that wouldn’t be very generous at all!
